About Oleg of the Drevlyans

http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/RUSSIA,%20Rurik.htm#

Oleg Sviatoslavich (killed [976/77] at the entry to Ovruch town). The Primary Chronicle names Yaropolk, Oleg and Vladimir as grandsons of Olga. His father designated him in 972 as a ruler for Drevlians. The source which records the name of Oleg´s mother, and the fact that he was illegitimate, has not yet been identified. After a dispute with his brother Yaropolk over hunting rights, the latter attacked and defeated Oleg, who was pushed from the bridge leading into Ovruch, and later buried at Vruchiy. The Primary Chronicle records that "the bodies of the two princes Yaropolk and Oleg sons of Sviatoslav" were buried in the Church of the Holy Virgin after being baptized in 1044.

Oleg was from 969 to his death in 977 the ruler of Drevlian lands, a region which is today in the western Ukraine, (Chernobyl). He was a son of Sviatoslav I of Kiev. Date of birth is not known, but is probably before 957. Sviatoslav split up his domains and gave Drevlian lands to Oleg. Oleg and his brother Yaropolk went to war after their father's death. According to Primary chronicle, Oleg killed Lyut, the son of Yaropolk's chief adviser and military commander Sveneld, when he hunted in the Drevlian lands which Oleg regarded as his own. In an act of revenge and at the insistence of Sveneld, Yaropolk went to war against his brother Oleg and killed him in Ovruch. Oleg was killed incidentally on the run in moat, and Yaropolk regret this. Then, Yaropolk sent his men to Novgorod, from which his other brother Vladimir had fled on receiving the news about Oleg's death. Yaropolk became the sole ruler of Rus'. In 1044 Yaroslav I the Wise commanded baptism of Oleg bones and reburial in Church of the Tithes. By opinion of Jan Amos Komenský (in Spis o Rodu Žerotínů), Bartosz Paprocki and Bohuslav Balbín, he was ancestor of the House of Zierotin.

Oleg was a Rurikid ruler of the Derevlyans from 969 to his death in 976. He was the second son of Sviatoslav I of Kyiv.

Date of birth is not known, but is probably before 957. Sviatoslav split up his domains, and gave the Drevlyan lands to Oleg. Oleg and his brother Yaropolk went to war after their father's death. According to Primary chronicle, Oleg killed Lyut, the son of Yaropolk's chief adviser and military commander Sveneld, when he hunted in the Drevlyan lands which Oleg regarded as his own. In an act of revenge and at the insistence of Sveneld, Yaropolk went to war against his brother Oleg and killed him in Ovruch. Oleg was killed incidentally on the run in moat, and Yaropolk did regret this. Then, Yaropolk sent his men to Novgorod, from which his other brother Vladimir had fled on receiving the news about Oleg's death. Yaropolk became the sole ruler of Rus'.

In 1044 Yaroslav I the Wise had Oleg's bones exhumed, christened, and reburied in the Church of the Tithes.

There is a Czech legend (mentioned by Jan Amos Komenský (in Spis o rodu Žerotínů), Bartosz Paprocki and Bohuslav Balbín, among others), that the noble House of Zierotin descends from a certain Oleg of Rus (see ru:Олег Моравский for details).

Žerotínové).
