Son of Edward and Mary (Snow) Bates. (Edward is still burial unknown)

He was the husband of Ruth Wright. They wed in Westford, MA on Jan. 16, 1744.

He served eight days in the Revolutionary War. Captain Bates died on July 4th,1775 as a result of wounds received April 19th,1775 at the battle of Concord. He commanded companies of men in the regiments of Colonel James Prescott and Colonel William Prescott.

He also served as selectman in 1764, 1774 and 1775.
