About Basil Deaton

In 1826, Basel Deaton and Barbara Stewart (Deaton) deeded land in Montgomery County, North Carolina to Basel's brother, Francis J. Deaton. Of interest, the land was previously held by the father of Rachel Holderness, wife of Francis J. Deaton.

From the "MUSTER ROLLS OF THE SOLDIERS OF THE WAR OF 1812 -- DETACHED MILITIA OF NORTH CAROLINA IN 1812 AND 1913, RALEIGH, NC, 1851: "Basel Deaton (sic) served in the Militia of North Carolina in the War of 1812, in the First Regiment of Captain Willis Harris, Montgomery County. The Detached Militia from this county were called into service at Wilmington, NC by orders issued September 29, 1814."

On October 17, 1830, Basel left the Deaton farm home in Montgomery County, North Carolina, and headed westward to Tennessee according to the Goodin Deaton Family Bible (from THE FAMILY OF GOODIN DEATON" by Bobbie Jones McLane, pages 12-13). Basel's destination, which was McNairy County, Tennessee, was over five hundred miles away when his wagon train pulled out of Montgomery County.

It appears that Basel Deaton soon after 1830 moved to McNairy County, Tennessee with his wife Barbara Stewart (Deaton). Montgomery County History indicates Joseph's son Basel moved to Hardeman County, Tennessee about this time.

Prior to 1819, McNairy County had been inhabited mostly by Chickasaw Indians so the decision to move there was not without Rish. The list of Basel's children making the trip may be incomplete. He may have had a son named Alonzo.

"... John Deaton Family, along with brother Basil, moved (from Montogmery County, N.C.) to McNairy County, Tennesse., in 1830, where Basil died just before 1840.
