Patriot, Louisiana Aide, Galvez Expedition. Creator of U.S. dollar sign. After migrating from his native Ireland to Pennsylvania, Pollock became a successful merchant, first in Pennsylvania, later in New Orleans. Staunchly patriotic, he was a major financial contributor to the Revolutionary War. He is said to have invented the U.S. dollar sign when, refusing to use the sign for the British pound, he wrote an S over a U (for "U.S."). (Submitted by contributor #46770385)
