About Oliver de Vaux, Patron of Pentney, Baron Dalston

 Oliver de Vaux Baron Dalston was born about 1175 in Dalston, Norfolk County, England.1

Oliver de Vaux, was descended from Robert, the brother of Hubert who received the Barony of Gilesland. This branch of the family was settled in Norfolk. Oliver was the second of seven sons of Robert de Vaux, and on the death of his older brother, who died without issue, succeeded him to the estates. The date of his death is not recorded, but he lived beyond 1245, when he is mentioned in the Pipe Roll. By his wife Petronilla, the widow of Henry de Mara, and also of, William de Longchamp, he left several sons. The succession of this barony devolved on the eldest son, on the death of whose two son, William and John, died without male issue, fell into the hands of Oliver's fourth son Roger de Vaux. ~Biographia Juridica. Oliver de Vaux, was one of the barons in arms against King John. In the 13th of John's reign, Oliver paid five hundred marks, and five palfreys, for license to marry Petronill, a widown of William de Longchamp, daughter and heir of Guy de Croun, feudal lord of Croun, by whom he had three sons, Robert and William who died without children, and John, who succeed to the estates, but died in 1288 leaving two daughters. In the thirteenth year of the reign of John, Baron Oliver gave five hundred marks and five palfreys for license to marry Petronill to obtain her estate.1 Oliver was one of the Barons who met at Stamford and at Brackley ordering King John to restore the ancient rights and liberties of the people.1 In the thirteenth year of the reign of Henry III, Baron Oliver was called upon to support the king in Wales, and supplied twenty-two knights. Later, in the 29th year of the reign of Henry III, he supplied 32 knight’s fees and a half.1

One of the Barons in Arms against King John. In the 13th year of that monarch's reign, he paid five hundred marks, and five palfreys, for license to marry Petronill, widow of William de Longchamp, and daughter and heir of Guy de Croun, feudal lord of Croun, and had issue: Robert, d. s.p. John, who succeeded to the estates, was steward of Aquitane, in 1283, and had an allowance of 200 pounds, per annum, for his support in that office.He d. in 1288, leaving his two daughters, his heirs: Patronilla, m. to William de Nerford, who in the division of the estates had Therston and Shotestram, in the county of Norfolk; Wysete, in Suffolk, the moiety of a messuage in London, called Blaunch - Apleton, and other lands, amounting to twenty five knights' fees; Maud, m. to Willam de Ros, who had the manor of Feston, and other lands in Lincolnshire, with the moiety of the messuage in London, amounting to nineteen knights' fees.
