About Oo-di-qua-no-si ‘George’ Blair

Biography

George Blair was born about 1800 in the Cherokee Nation (East), the son of James Blair, a white man, and Sallie Smith, a Cherokee woman.

He married first to Sarah Blythe, 1/2 Cherokee daughter of Jonathan Blythe, who died in route to Indian Territory during the forced removal of the Cherokees in 1838-39.

George Blair and Sarah Blythe were the parents of James, Betsy, Katie, Lewis, Amy, Jonathan, Charles, Sallie. The 1835 Cherokee census shows a family of seven living on Tusquitty Creek. [1]

After her death, he married her sister, Nancy Blythe.

Nancy Blythe and George Blair were the parents of Lucy (S.H.Benge); Elizabeth (J.Lowrey); and Margaret (O.M.Benge,Sr); & Thomas Blair, who inherited the old Sequoyah property.

George Blair tried to hide out and was caught by the military and ended up driving a wagon on the Trail of Tears. George and his family were forced on the Trail of Tears and settled near Sallisaw. His wife and at least one of his children died on the trail and he married her sister. He bought a log house from Sequoya's widow and had more children by his second wife. The house is a historical site now.

Husb. of Nancy Blythe; and Sarah Blythe (m/o Lucy [Blair] Benge).

Article from the Democrat American / Friday, September 12, 1930 / Page 3 describes his land purchase: DATES need to be confirmed:

"In 1885(sic), Sequoyah's widow (Mrs. George Guess)sold the house and the set of house logs to Mr. George Blair, a Cherokee Indian, the father of Mr. Thomas Blair. The elder Mr. Blair took the set of house logs and built another cabin adjoining the original house, with a stack chimney between and this double log house stands now as it was when Mr. Blair finished his addition. Mr. Blair died in 1887 at the age of 98 years and is buried in a little cemetery only a few yards from this house."

George & Nancy were parents of Thomas Blair (buried here) who inherited the old Sequoyah property; Elizabeth (J.Lowrey); and Margaret Blair (marr.O.Martin Benge,Sr.)
