Orabella de Mar, heiress of Leuchars, Countess of Mar

Orabella de Leuchars was born at Leuchars, Fife, Scotland c1135, the daughter of Ness of Leuchars.

She married Robert de Quincy, Lord of Buckley and of Fawside c1153

Robert and Orabella had the following children -

Saire de Quincy c1155

Robert de Quincy - Robert married Hawise of Chester, Countess of Lincoln and they had a daughter: Margaret de Quincy who married Magna Charta Surety John de Lacy.

Orabella and Robert appear to have been divorced c1178, as she later married Adam of Fife, whom she later divorces.

Orabella married for a third time when she married Gillechrist, and became Countess of Mar.

Leuchars series of charters include:

Orabilis, countess of Mar, daughter of Ness, son of William, confirms to St Andrews Priory the grant made by her father, Ness, son of William, with his body.2nd April 1172 x 4 August 1188.

Other charters include :

Ness, son of William (of Leuchars), and Orabilis his daughter, grant the church of Lathrisk, Fife, to St Andrews Priory, for the welfare of their souls.

Orabilis, daughter and heiress of Sir Ness, grants 'Davach Ichthar hathyn' to St Andrews Priory, for the welfare of her soul. (Earl Gillechrist of Mar was a witness to this charter)

Orabella's name appears to have been passed down through the genrations. It descended from Orabile to her granddaughter, who was the daughter of Saher de Quincy IV, first earl of Winchester. This Orabile II married Richard de Harcourt and passed the name on to her own granddaughter, the daughter of Alice la Zouche. The first Orabile is apparently the first known holder of the name, which does not occur regularly in England or Scotland until the thirteenth century. It seems likely that she had at least a share, through her marriage into the Quincy family, in popularising the name and in transferring it from a Scoto-Norman context to an English context: a significant if minor by-product of the international links of one Anglo-Scottish family. The name ultimately became Arabella and in this form remained popular in Scotland.

Orabella died c1181.

Orabilis De Mar was born to Ralph "Nes" De Mar and Unknown MNU De Mar. Orabilis married Robert De Quincey and had a child: Sir Saher De Quincey, Earl of Winchester. She passed away on 1192.
