O. J. EARLSLEY (1869) is one of the few of those who came to Yellow Medicine county prior to 1870, that are yet living within the confines of the county. His home is near the Minnesota river, section 15, Minnesota Falls township, where he owns five acres of land.
Mr. Earlsley is a native of Pennsylvania and was born at Almira December 27, 1848. His father, R. C. Earlsley, was a son of New York State, his birthplace being near lthica. He died at the age of seventy- five years. Our subjects mother, Polly (Pond) Earlsley, was also a native of New York. She died when O. J. was a child. The Earlsley family are of old American stock, some of the ancestors taking part in the Revolutionary War.
O. J. Earlsley lived in Almira, Pennsylvania, until five or six years of age, then went with his parents to Whitewater, Wisconsin, a little later to Cold Springs, Wisconsin, and still later to Spring Green, Wisconsin. There the family lived a few years and then moved to Lone Rock, Wisconsin. The father started that town and lived there six or seven years. In the spring of 1860 O. J. Earlsley moved to near Winona, Minnesota, and located at a point where the village of Utica is now, on the Winona & St. Peter railroad, where his father had a farm. After residing there some time our subject visited different parts of the country, working at farm labor in Wisconsin, teaming in Nebraska, and steamboating in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
In 1869 O. J. Earlsley came to Yellow Medicine county, but he remained only a short time. He returned to Utica and spent two years in the dray business. He returned to Yellow Medicine county in 1871 and worked on the Gorham Powers farm. He then bought a small piece of land near Echo and farmed it a short time, after which he moved to the Yellow Medicine river, where he lived many years. He settled on his present place in 1909.
Mr. Earlsley was united in marriage at St. Charles, Minnesota, to Elizabeth Falkingham, daughter of Joseph Falkingham, one of the early settlers of Yellow Medicine county. Mrs. Earlsley was born in Canada in 1848. They have four children living, namely: Etta (Mrs. Iver Rieten), Eva (Mrs. John M. Johnson), and Mary Jane (Mrs. George Falkingham), all of Minnesota Falls township; and Anna (Mrs. P. Olson), of Granite Falls. One child, William Carl, died at the age of three years.
