Murder of a Seward County Man
A dispatch from Nebraska City of the 23d Dst.? gives the following information as to the sad death of Oscar Wheelock, a former resident of Seward county: "Last June the body of a man was found in the Missouri River about two miles above this city. The only thing to lead to the identification of the corpse was a card bearing the name of John H. McMannis. The body was buried on the river bank and the circumstances forgotten until yesterday, when the remains were taken up and reburied in Wyuka Cemetery. The exhuming of the remains led to their identification and the discovery that a dark crime had been committed. The body was recognized as that of Oscar Wheelock by his widow, two sons and a daughter. They also discovered a bullet hole right above the left temple, which was evidently the cause of his death. Wheelock's family lived in Tamora, Seward county. But a short time previous to his disappearance, he had been in business at Schuyler, and left that place for Omaha with $500 or $600 in his possession. He was last seen alive in company of a well known confidence man and a negro. The confidence man is still in Omaha, and Wheelock's son, who is an employee of the B & M at Plattsmouth, has employed detectives and will endeavor to bring his father's murderers to justice."

The many old friends of Oscar Wheelock will be sorry to learn that he committed suicide at Omaha in July. We learn that he has for some time past been subject to temporary spells of insanity, and somewhere about the middle of July he threw himself off of one of the bridges of Omaha into the muddy water of the Missouri. Last week a body was found floating in the water at Nebraska City and was identified by his wife as his by a ring on one of the fingers and a pocket knife found on the person of the floater.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jul 22 2022, 21:23:09 UTC
