Triesterstraße 1 (Gruppe 18, 12) Oskar Karlweis was the son of a civil servant name Karl Weis who wrote for the theatre and about Vienna. His older suster Marta was also an author (she married Jakob Wassermann).

Oskar grew up in Vienna and studied law, but he abandoned his studied because he was more interested in art. He became an actor and from the early 1920s he appeared on the stages of Vienna. In 1927 he went to Berlin, where he worked for the Deutschen Theater and was succesful in Strauss operatta's like "Der Fledermaus" and "Wiener Blut". He was also a good singer and dancer and his first succesful movie part was in "Zwei Herzen im Dreiviertel-Takt" (1930). His part of Kurt in "Die Drei von der Tankstelle" was a huge succes and many more movies followed. He was Jewish and moved to Austria when the nazi's came to power in 1933. In 1938 he went to Paris, where he performed with Karl Farkas. When France was occupied as well he went to the USA, where he played for immigrants together with Farkas. Especially "Rosalinda" was very succesful and ran for over 600 performances. After the war he returned to Europe and in 1948 he was back on the stage in Vienna. He made several movies before he died in New York in 1956. Karlweis was married to film producer Ninon Tallon (1908-1977).
