Emigrated from Hallingdal, Norway in the spring of 1852, with his parents, wife (Christie Olesdatter Wold), son Hans, and brothers Embrik and Hans. His son Ole was born on the Atlantic Ocean during the voyage. The family spent the winter of 1852 in Rock County, Wisconsin with Østen's sister Torgund, then moved to Houston County, Minnesota in the spring of 1853. Østen died there a few years afterwards of "auge", a form of malaria. He is buried on a slope of uncultivated land at the edge of the old Maelbratten farm, across the road from where the school house used to be.
