About Oswald Emanuel Hoyna
ACCIDENT NO. 25— March 2nd.— Oswald Hoyna and William Muckala, employed in a drift at the 6th level, south of No. 13 shaft, on the Osceola amygdaloid lode of the Calumet and Hecla Mine. These men drilled four holes and charged them, intending to set them off. Hoyna lit the fuse hole and tried to set fire to the fuse of the second hole, but difficulty was found in setting fire to the second fuse. The first fuse was burning rapidly. They ran out of the drift thinking the second fuse had not been lighted. Just as the hole went off, Hoyna went back into the drift just as the second blast went off killing him instantly.
An inquest was held before Justice Jackola.
William Muckala testified as above stated.
Verdict: "We, the jury, find that the said Oswald Hoyna, came to his death at the 6th level, of No. 13 shaft of the Calumet and Hecla, Osceola lode, by accidental discharge of a blast on the second day of March, 1905."
Herman Hoyna, about 36 years old, was killed yesterday afternoon at Shaft number 13 at the Calumet and Hecla mine. He was the 2nd man to die at that mine this week. He accidentally lit the mine blast with his lamp instead of the candle usually used to set off a blast and was killed by the premature blast. He is survived by a wife and five children. He had worked at Calumet a few months after leaving the Kearsarge mine. He operated a store at the Ronda mine and lived there at his death. The funeral will take place at the Finnish church on 8th Street, Calumet on Sunday afternoon. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet.
