About Oswald Bertram Lower

REGISTER (ADELAIDE, SA) – MARCH 19 1925 OBITUARY – Mr Oswald Bertram Lower

MR OSWALD BERTRAM LOWER, chemist whose unexpected death occurred at his residence, Wayville, on Wednesday, was born in Adelaide. At an early age he showed signs of being the possessor of a fine baritone voice, which was afterwards frequently heard on the concert platform at Broken Hill, where he was a life member of the Broken Hill Quartet Club. He was probably, however, better known in scientific circles, where he had a world-wide reputation as an entomologist. His Australian collection of moths and butterflies is one of the finest in the world, containing hundreds of unique specimens. He was a voluminous writer and considered a leading authority on this subject. He was a member of the Entomological Society of London, Zoological Society of London, Linneau Society of London and New South Wales, Royal Society of South Australia, and many other learned societies, including various philatelical societies. His collection of Australian postage stamps being specially valuable, many states being almost complete. He was a prominent Freemason, being a Past Master of Barrier Lodge, No.173, New South Wales, and also held various offies in the higher branches of the craft. He leaves a widow and two sons, also five brothers (four being qualified chemists), and one sister (Mrs Walter Torode).

Encyclopedia of Australian Science Oswald Bertram Lower was a pharmaceutical chemist who had a deep interest in entomology, especially butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). He authored numerous works on the subject and his Lepidoptera collection is housed at the South Australian Museum.

Brian Porter remembers going to Oswald's home in Kent Town and seeing this collection hanging on the walls in the passage way.
