Mendlik grew up in Budapest , where his father was a mathematics teacher and Oscar received his classical training at the gym. Később Lotz Károly tanítványaként részt vett a Vígszínház freskóinak festésében. 1891-ben Fiuméban járt, ettől kezdve tengerfestésnek szánta művészetét. 1894-ben állított ki először a Műcsarnokban. 1898-ban Olaszo.-ban megismerkedett Mynssen Julia holland szobrásznővel, akit feleségül vett, s vele Hollandiába költözött.
