ANOTHER MINE DISASTER. Four men lose their lives in the Calumet and Hecla Mine. HOUGHTON, Mich., Oct. 3. -- A terrible explosion occurred in the Red Jacket perpendicular shaft of the Calumet and Hecla mine at noon today. Twenty-six miners were working at the bottom of the shaft, over 1,000 feet below the surface. Blasts of dynamite were fired as usual last night, but one charge failed to explode. At noon a miner accidentally struck the dynamite cartridge with his pick and an explosion followed. The men were huddled together and it was remarkable that any escaped death. Two, Alfred Erikson and Otto Flink, were killed outright. Nelson Bloom and Captain John Cameron were fatally injured and seven others were hurt, some of them very seriously.

HOUGHTON, Mich., 3. lokakuuta -- Kauhea jäjähdys sattui tänään keskipäivällä Red Jacket -pystykuilussa Calumet & Hecla -kaivoksessa. 26 kaivosmiestä oli työskentelemässä kuilun pohjalla, yli 1000 jalkaa (300 m) maanpinnan alapuolella. Dynamiittipanoksia räjäytettiin viime yönä tavalliseen tapaan, mutta yksi räjähteistä jäi suutariksi. Keskipäivän aikaan yksi kaivosmiehistä löi erehdyksessä hakullaan dynamiittipanosta, joka räjähti. Miehet olivat lähellä toisiaan ja oli ihme, että kukaan selvisi hengissä. Kaksi miehistä, Alfred Erikson ja Otto Flink saivat surmansa välittömästi.
