Otto J Tonneson, 74, of Forest City, Iowa, died Friday, February 24, 1989, at home of cancer, following a lengthy illness. Burial in Dovre Lutheran Cemetery, Newburg, North Dakota.

Otto was born on March 23, 1914 in Carbury, North Dakota, a son of Jonas and Ingeborg (Fylling) Tonnesson.

He was a graduate of Newburg High School, Newburg, North Dakota and earned a bachelors degree from Minot University, Minot, North Dakota. In 1959, he received his masters degree in education from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

In addition to his career in education he was actively involved in family farms near Newburg, North Dakota and Twin Valley, Minnesota, now owned and operated by a son, Jon.

On June 29, 1938, he married Margaret Thorenson at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot, North Dakota. From 1938 to 1955, they taught in public schools in Voltaire, Gackle and Newburg, North Dakota where he was superintendent of schools.

From 1955 to 1964, he served as president of the Dakota Lutheran High School in Minot, North Dakota.

In 1964, they moved to Forest City, Iowa and he joined the staff of Waldorf College. During his tenure at Waldorf, he was director of planned giving and founder of the Waldorf College Heritage Club. He retired from Waldorf College in 1983.

He has been an active member of Immanual Lutheran Church, served on the Evangelism Committee, helped establish an endowment memorial fund and provided leadership for Operation Baton.

He was a member of the Forest City Rotary Club, Gideon's International, Winnebago Area Retired Teachers Association, Kum Along Club, Sons of Norway and the Republican party.

From 1983 to 1987, he served on the 20 county council of the Elderbridge Agency on Aging.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret; three sons, James of Fergus Falls, Minnesota; Jon of Newburg, North Dakota; and Jerome of Ankeny, Iowa; two daughters, JoAnne Helland of Lake Mills, Iowa and Jeannine Bruesewitz of Milaca, Minnesota.

And 10 grandchildren.

He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs Alma Nelson, Bottineau, North Dakota and Mrs Julia Johnson, Rolette, North Dakota; and three brothers, Thomas, Westhope, North Dakota; Nick, Newburg, North Dakota and John, Minot, North Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sisters.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immanual Lutheran Church, Forest City, Iowa, with the Rev. Ole Winter and the Rev Norbert Jolivette officiating. A second service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Dovre Lutheran Church in Newburg, North Dakota, with burial in the Dovre Lutheran Cemetery, Newburg, North Dakota.
