BIOGRAPHY: Iowa Old Press (http://www.iowaoldpress.com/IA/Audubon/1901/JAN.html) Audubon County Journal Exira, Audubon Co. Iowa 1/3/1901 The Brayton-Oakfield column included a short biography of O. F.IDE, one of Brayton's leading lights; revealing that he had been an orphan waif who showed up one day on the doorstep of Brayton residents by the name of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver SMITH, who took the poor boy in and raised him to adulthood. BIOGRAPHY: In doing my personal research, I noted the following information about an early county history printed on an installment basis in the Journal. I am posting this in the hope some listers might find it of value, or at least of interest. The dates noted relate to the date of the issue of the paper from which the summaries made by me were taken: Fritz Hansen, Wichita, Kansas (a native of Brayton, Audubon county, Iowa)

10/13/1898 This issue of the paper shows that people's travels were considered newsworthy, even before the coming of the automobile. It carries the reports that: (1) An Audubon man had ridden his bicycle the approximate 13 miles between Audubon and Brayton and had wrecked his machine in an accident, and (2) The jeweler in Elk Horn had ridden his bicycle to Ross, about 20 miles away, but because of rain had had to return to Elk Horn via stage coach.

4/27/1899 The Brayton-Oakfield correspondent advised that:"Dr. Koob was in Atlantic Monday as an expert witness in a lawsuit. He was detained until it was too late to catch the evening train home and as a result wheeled it up on a bicycle." (Note: This was a bike ride of 14 miles.)

5/11/1 5/11/1899 The Brayton-Oakfield column had three items of interest, namely: 1. "A Good Time For young and old at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Ide, Thursday evening, May 18th, where the first of a series of social entertainments for the purpose of protecting the friendly intimacy of the people will be given. Everyone who comes is expected to wear something that will illustrate or suggest the name of a book. A laughable time will be enjoyed in guessing what books are represented. Ice cream and cake, vocal and instrumental music, and games of various kinds will be provided. All will be cordially welcomed. It is especially hoped that no young people will miss this sociable. Come determined on having a good time and on helping to make it pleasant for others." 2. A report that while plowing his field one day one of the local farmers saw an eagle sitting on a fence. The farmer shot and killed the bird, which "measured six feet five inches from tip to tip." 3. "The City Council of the town of Brayton met for the first time on Monday evening. The officials were all sworn in and organization was perfected. There will be quite a number of ordinances to passand considerable other work will have to be done before the council will get the municipal affairs of the little city in perfect running order."

5/18/1899 The writer of the Brayton-Oakfield column reported that: "The city council has passed an ordinance permitting the sale of intoxicating liquors and on Thursday evening granted C.W. Jenkins a permit to run a saloon within the incorporated limits. The license was placed at $400.00. Frank Freeman was granted permission to conduct a billiard and pool hall and the license fixed at $20.00 per annum. The closing hour was placed at eleven o'clock."

5/25/1899 The news in this week's Brayton-Oakfield column included the next two items. 1. "The City Council of Brayton last week passed an ordinance restraining all persons from permitting livestock to run loose within the incorporated limits. For such offense a fine of not less than fifty cents or more than five dollars will be imposed. Therefore, take notice and govern yourselves accordingly." 2. "The social at O. T. Ide's place last Thursday evening was largely attended, about seventy being out. The event proved a most delightful evening, especially to the young folks. The guessing contestwas a source of much merriment. Miss Frankie Crane received the first prize and Roy Heath the booby prize. It is such affairs as these that promote the friendly intimacy of our people and we are hoping more of the kind will follow."

6/1/1899 By reading the Brayton-Oakfield column we learned that: "Friday afternoon Charley Bisom looked up and saw a covered wagon coming into town, and as the wagon drew nearer, he beheld his brother, Daniel, whom he had not seen for twenty seven long years. The good man and his wife had driven overland all the way from Primghar, O'Brien county, (Iowa, about 150 miles) to visit Charley and his family."

8/31/1899 The Brayton-Oakfield column advised the paper's readers that: 1. "A large number of our people will go to Atlantic today to attend Ringling Brothers' colossal circus, returning on the special train this evening." 2. "There will be a social at the home of John C. Nelson, four and a half miles southwest of Brayton on the evening of Saturday, September 2nd. All are cordially invited to attend. Girls bring cake."
