Green Bay - Earl Wallen's mother didn't know her only child had died trying to save his friends and his ship until more than five months after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

By then the United States had been plunged into a war that would take the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans. Wallen would be among the first American casualties of World War II - he died on the USS California, one of the ships sunk on Battleship Row 70 years ago Wednesday.
