Andrew was born the fourth child of James M. and Margaret Melton McLaney. His parents later emigrated to Pike County, Alabama. He enlisted on April 1, 1861 into Co. G. 1st Alabama Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of Iuka in October, 1862 and furloughed home to recuperate. Returning to his regiment he was wounded slightly and captured at Port Hudson, Louisiana. He received a furlough home until exchanged and at that time married Fredonia Boswell in October, 1863. He was again wounded at the Battle of Atlanta, Georgia on July 20, 1864.
His brothers, Harrison served with him, but brother James was in Co. L. 15th Alabama Infantry and William was in Co. E. 60th Alabama when he was killed in battle.
