About Padraig / Patrick, 5th Earl of Atholl
PADRAIG, MORMAER OF ATHOLL
Padraig or Patrick of Atholl was Mormaer of Atholl from 1236 / 37 until his death in 1241. Per "The Chronicle of Melrose", Padraig was lodging in Haddington, East Lothian when his enemies, "most wicked men", torched the lodge and killed Padraig and his two unknown companions. "The Chronicle of Melrose" had a high opinion of Padraig, saying he was "imbued with all courtly wisdom and wit"............Padraig was suceeded by his aunt, Forbhlaith, along with her husband David de Hastings............Consequent upon his murder the Scottish nobility, exhorted by David de Hastings and led by Patrick II / Earl of March, pursued one W. Bissett (Walter or William, sources disagree), who sought protection from King Alexander II. Despite the king securing him in a number of safe houses, W. Bissett was eventually banished to England, with his estates in Scotland forfeited.
