About Patricia Irene Tombaugh
Today is the anniversary of the birth, at Kansas City, Missouri on 7 Nov 1912, of the American educator, artist (and enthusiastic supporter of her husband, the pioneering astronomer Clyde Tombaugh, discoverer of the planet Pluto) Patricia ‘Patsy’ Edson Tombaugh. She met her future husband in 1930, not long after his discovery of Pluto, and the couple married in 1934. She worked with and supported him on lecture tours throughout the world until his death in 1997, and was present at the 19 January 2006 launch of the New Horizons space probe (the primary mission of which was to study the planet Pluto during a fly-by in 2015) and which had Clyde Tombaugh’s ashes on board. Asteroid 3310 Patsy, discovered on 9 October 1931 by her husband from Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff, Arizona, was named in her honour.
