About Patrick Lindsay, of Kilbirnie

PATRICK LINDSAY OF KILBIRNIE

Patrick Lindsay of Kilbirnie is the fifth but second surviving so of John, first Earl of Lindsay, Lord Parbroath, who succeeded as the seventeenth Earl of Crawford, and his wife Lady Margaret Hamilton. He is said to have been born in September 1646. The Scots Peerage III: 36

Death

Patrick Lindsay of Kilbirnie and his wife Margaret Crawford died intestate. The Scots Peerage account of the family reports that they died in October 1681, but this is wrong. The Scots Peerage IV: 174 They actually died in October 1680. Testament Dative

The testament dative and inventory of the deceased: "Mr Patrick Lindesay of Kilbirnie and Dame Margarit Craufurd spouses" was given up on 3 September 1681 by: "ane noble Earle Charles Earle of Haddingtoune tutor dative and upgiver forsd in name & behalf of Johne Craufurd eldest lawfull sone to the defuncts in respect of his pupillaritie & lesse age". On 23 September 1681 Mr. Robert Mayne, fiar of Lochwood, acted himself as cautioner for the Earl of Haddington, and confirmation was granted to him on 20 October 1681. Marriage

Patrick Lindsay married Margaret Crawford, one of the daughters and heiresses of Sir John Crawford of Kilbirnie. He is said to have assumed the name and arms of Crawford of Kilbirnie, under the terms of a bond of tailzie executed by his father-in-law, but it is difficult to reconcile this statement with the evidence reviewed here. [Note] The Scots Peerage IV: 174

Patrick Lindsay and Margaret Crawford were married on 27 December 1664: "in the kirk of Halyroodhous" in the Canongate parish, near Edinburgh in Midlothian, Scotland. Margaret may have been residing at Ceres in Fife in the period leading up to her marriage for she was booked for proclamation of marriage there, rather than at the Canongate. Her marriage record at the Canongate reads as follows: "Tuysday 27 December 1664. The same day Mr Patrick Lindsay second sone to the Earle of Craufurd and Mistris Margaret Craufurd heretrix of Kilburnie were lawfullie married in the kirk of Halyroodhous be Mr James Kid minister thrat and that on a testimonial of their proclamatioun from Sires kirk subt be Mr William Row minister thr and Mr David Christison sessioun clerk daited the 25 December 1664".
