PATRICK MAXWELL OF STANLEY

Patrick Maxwell of Stanley is the son of Sir Robert Maxwell of Calderwood and his first wife Elizabeth Danielston. According to William Fraser: "Patrick Maxwell appears to have died without issue, as the lands and barony of Stanley soon afterwards became the patrimony of Archibald Maxwell, younger son of George Maxwell, nephew of this Patrick, and the first of Newark." 16 August 1473: Charter issued under the Great Seal of Scotland which confirms that Sir John Maxwell of Calderwood has given one half of the lands of Stanele, adjacent to Thornle on the east, to Patrick Maxwell and his lawful male heirs, whom failing to return to Sir John and his heirs. Sir John reserved his own liferent of the property, and the liferent of his wife Margaret. Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, A.D. 1424-1513, charter number 1137 on p. 232
