About Patrick MacDowall-Crichton, 6th Earl of Dumfries
Biographical Summary
"Patrick Macdowall Crichton, fifth Earl of Dumfries, who succeeded, was the nephew of the fourth Earl, being the eldest son of the latter's sister, as stated above. He was born 15 October 1726; became an officer in the army, and had a company in the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards 1762. In 1768 he succeeded his uncle as Earl of Dumfries only. He was elected a Representative Peer of Scotland in 1790, and so continued till his death on 7 April 1803. He married, 12 September 1771, Margaret, daughter of Ronald Crauford of Restalrig. By her, who died 5 May 1799, the Earl had issue one daughter, besides another who died in infancy."
