About Patrick Peter Fletcher

1827

Peter (Patrick) Fletcher, born 9th April 1827. Isle of Jura. Baptised 18th April.

1850

Peter (Patrick) Fletcher arrived in South Africa.

Pocket Bible, clasp engraved "Patrick Fletcher From a Friend 1850". [Zimbile ]
In ink on flyleaf: "From a Friend". There are various pencil jottings: Jeremiah 10.10; Romans 11 chapter 33-3(???; Hymn for Sunday 31st ) and two signatures "P. Fletcher"

• Jean Campbell Fletcher, b. 30.7.1861, Keerom Farm [?], Namaqualand. • "July 30 Jeannie born." (Keerom Diary) 1861.

• She was born three months after the commencement of building the "Hardebest House". • There is no unequivocal evidence linking "Hardebest House" to Keerom. So Agnes went to the Hardebest House at Keerom (?), at the last moment, and Jean was born there.? • Taaiboskraal is about xxx km SE of Keerom, and nearer? to the old missionary road from the south.

• 22nd August " Baby" born. A girl.

She is not named in the Diary. Based on the baptismal report of the Neuwe Kerk in Springbok, it is reasonable to assume the baby was Murray Fletcher, named after her paternal aunt from Jura. N.B. Neue Kerk recs do not agree with Diary on year date. (acc. to the data sent by......)

1865

• Robert Alexander Fletcher. Born 6th June 1865 at Keerom farm. Rhodesia Umvutcha branch.

• Patrick (Pat) Fletcher born 28th May 1867 at Keerom farm. [The Zimbili, Rhodesia, branch.]

1869

• Eliza Isabella Fletcher born 2nd May 1869. christened 26 Aug.1869 at Kookfontein [ later called Steinkopf?] [Neue Kerk also?]

• Thomas Arnott Eaglesim Fletcher, born 12th June, 1871. In Namaqualand? Possibly at Port Nolloth. [Garrick Fletcher??]

• Archibald Fletcher b. 10/11 Sept !874 d. 19 Sept 1947/48 in UK ["born on 11th Sept 1873. Died South Brent, Devon on 19th Sept 1948 aged 75yrs." according to Janet Fletcher, his cousin and wife. [Inscription on font of parish church on Jura. See Dawn Coburn email.] [Archibald's first wife L??? died in ,,, A widower, he went on a cruise in ... and was trapped in the UK on the outbreak of WW2. Here he later married his cousin Janet, of Jura.] Link Archibald Page "Born 10 Sept 1873, in Aliwal North," Cape Province. (S.A. Who's Who. 18xx?) Link [If this is correct then Agnes, at least, had left Namaqualand and was in the Eastern Cape. About 100?km N of Queenstown.]

• Angus Somerville Fletcher. b.13.05.1883/5?, Queenstown?. Cape Colony, d. 1960.

(South Africa.- Rhodesia.- New York) [His mother would have been about 42 when he was born. He would have been about 14 when his father died] Angus Somerville Page

• Peter (Patrick) Fletcher died, 17th March 1897 in Rondebosch. Probably at "The Firs", Rondebosch. Buried at Maitland Cemetery, Cape Town.

• Agnes Eaglesim (m. Fletcher) died 7th August 1901, at Rondebosch, Cape Town.

The inscription ontheir joint memorial stone, Maitland Cemetery, Cape Town: "Patrick Fletcher Born 9th April 1827 at Craighouse Jura Scotland and Agnes Fletcher, his wife Born 11th October 1841 at Paisley, Scotland Died at Rondebosch 7th August 1901"

[That this Bible ended up in Africa unfortunately does not provide evidence of where Peter was when it was given by the Friend. In the 1844 copywork books he signed himself Peter, Here, six years later, he is referred to as Patrick. In the Keerom Diaries 1861-65 he is only referrred to as Peter.[By Agnes?] In the official Messelpad reports (1868-'71) he signed himself Patrick. In an official letter in 1885 his son Pat(rick) refers to him as Patrick. His grandson Patrick (called Peter), used to say his grandfather was Patrick called Peter. Surely it is most likely that "Peter", like "Pat", were simply short, informal and chilhood names for someone most likely christened Patrick? Some fossicking in Jura might turn up something..?]
