Patrick Ryan was born in Ireland at Borrisoleigh in the County of Tipperary on 14th February 1855. The Ryan family home in Borrospleigh is know as "The Glebe", Glenkeen" and is still occupied by a Ryan descendent. He, and his future wife, Bridget Treacy both emigrated to Australia, arriving in Townsville on 29th June 1880, after a journey of one hundred and ten days aboard the ship "Scottish Hero". They married four days later on 3rd July 1880 in St Joseph's church, Townsville.
In 1918 he and family were living in Innisfail, North Queensland and must have lived through the big cyclone of 1918 which was extremely intense, leaving widespread damage in the Innisfail/Babinda district.
He died on 11th November 1939 aged 84 years and is buried in the West End Cemetery in Townsville. Patrick is said to have had a very gentle nature and was very devoted to his wife. After his death, he would regularly visit her grave with flowers.
Patrick's twin brother, Thomas, also migrated to Australia, probably at the same time as him.
