FATAL ACCIDENT NO. 38 — June 3, 1908 – Paul Bria, Calumet Br., Calumet & Hecla Mine.

A fall of rock at No. 6 shaft, Calumet of the C.&H. Mine caused the death of Paul Bria on this date.

An inquest was held and the following witnesses sworn in and examined:

John W. Kerr: “I am a miner at No. 6 Calumet Shaft, C.&H. Was working last night at time of accident to Paul Bria at the 49th level. He was a trammer. We had rigged up our machine and I went out to get a set of drills. When coming back I heard a piece of rock come down and I looked and saw Paul under it. I called my partner, they came and we lifted the rock off. Should judge the rock weighed 500 lbs. We supposed the place was alright. Paul was sitting on the side of the car waiting for the other two cars to be filled, when the rock fell, and he was caught between the rock and the side of the car. It caught him about the hips.”

John A. Larson: "I Am timber-boss at No. 6 Calumet shaft. I was at the 49th level Tuesday morning. We were in the drift and trimmed it down about 2 weeks ago. We worked in that place last week and up to Tuesday of this week and saw nothing dangerous, everything seemed secure. Have been timbering for 5 years. It was vein-rock that fell. It must have been a slip in the ground that showed no crack."

John E. O'Neil: “I was at the place of the accident not more than 10 minutes before the accident occurred. Everything looked all right, no sign of any loose rock. The nature of the rock is such that when the air gets at it, it breaks like glass, comes off without any warning what ever."

Verdict: "That the said Paul Bria came to his death by a fall of rock at No. 6 shaft, Calumet Branch of Calumet & Hecla Mine at the 49th level, on the 3rd day of June, 1908."
