Anchorage Daily News February 1, 1994:

Retired merchant Marine Capt. Paul D. Ellison, 84, died of natural causes Jan. 28 at Our Lady of Compassion Care Center in Anchorage. A graveside service and burial were at Cypress Lawn Cemetery in Colma, Calif.

Capt. Ellison was born July 11, 1909, in Urbana, Ohio. He left home at the age of 14 to begin a life at sea in the Merchant Marines. He started as a cabin boy and ended his career as captain of various ships for the Matson Navigation Co. His family said, "According to his shipmates, 'He was one of the best.' " Capt. Ellison moved to Anchorage in May 1993 to help his son's and grandson's air tour business, Ellison Air. Before that, he lived in San Mateo, Calif., when he wasn't at sea, and during his retirement. He was a member of the Avanti Car Club and could be seen driving his 1972 Avanti through the San Mateo highlands on sunny days. Capt. Ellison also enjoyed restoring 1969 Mercury Cougars. He re-built one for each of his grandchildren, one for his son, and one for himself. "He enjoyed teaching and helping the younger generation and had many youngsters and young adults drop into his home for long talks and to listen to the captain's sea stories," said his family. Capt. Ellison was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his half- brother, Don; and his half-brother, Jack.

He is also survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John and Whitney; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, John Jr. and Diana; and great-grandson, James, all of Anchorage; his granddaughter, Tristan Ellison Annan and great- granddaughter, Devan Ellison Annan, both of Flagstaff, Ariz.; his brother, Lester of New Lebanon, Ohio; and half-brothers, Thomas Jr. of Costa Mesa, Calif and Gene of Texas; his sister-in-law, Marilyn and nephew, James, both of Huntington Beach, Calif; his niece, Kelli Lageman of Phoenix, Md.; his nephews, Paul of Trabuco Canyon, Calif.; and Dan of Fountain Valley, Calif. Arrangements by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes and Crematory of Anchorage and Green Street Mortuary of San Francisco, Calif.
