About Paul Richard Haas

Richard, 97, of Margate, passed away at Seashore Gardens in Galloway Township.

He was a semi-pro soccer player in his youth in Germany. Singled out by the Nazis and sent to Dachau Concentration Camp, he escaped Germany via France to Casablanca and then immigrated to the United States.

He was soon drafted into the U.S. Army, earned the rank of sergeant, and served in Europe until 1945.

Upon returning to the U.S. he struggled valiantly to bring his parents and brother to America. While his father sadly died in Europe, he was able to bring his mother and brother to the U.S.

Richard worked for many years as an accountant before retiring in 1977. He was a longtime member of Beth El Synagogue, where he was a three time past president.

Preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Julius, survivors include his wife, Margot Haas; his children, Susan (Jerry Godsil) Haas and Linda (Richard Driver) Haas; his grandchildren, Julia Haas-Godsil and Emily Haas-Godsil, and his step-grandchildren, Garreth, Ellen and Megan Driver.

Margo met her husband, Richard Haas, who was also a German holocaust survivor, while living in the city. His job as an agent for the IRS moved the family to Atlantic City in 1949.

He bought a home on Gladstone Avenue in Margate in 1957, where Haas continued to work as a seamstress. She has lived there ever since.

“My husband was not for many words,” Haas said. “He called up and said, ‘I’ve found a house.’ I said, ‘Can I see it?’ He said, ‘No, it’s too late. I bought it.’”

The couple married in 1948 and had two daughters, Susan, 68, a retired school librarian, and Linda, 62, a photographer. Richard died in 2009 at the age of 97.
