Michelet, being a French name, is unique in Norway. The Michelets in Norway are descended from two Huguenot brothers, Jacob (Jacques) and Paul. The Huguenots were the Protestant believers and must have felt unwelcome in Catholic France so they emigrated to Norway which by that time had changed to Protestant.
Jacques Michelet, their grandfather, was born in 1550 in Metz. His first wife, Suzanne Joly, died in 1590 leaving him with at least four children. He had at least two more childern by hi ssecond wife, Suzanne Viriat.
In 1579, he was "receuver" taxation officer. In 1587, he was promoted to "commissaire du tresorier royal" (assistant to the royal treasurer. In 1593, he was appointed "commissaire de l'extraordinaire des guerres" which is an senior officer charged with supply operations and financial matters for military units.
According to a deed filed on December 4th 1604, Jacques purchased the land previously owned by Jacquemin Petre in province Vallieres, but he continued to live in Metz until his death in 1610.
Jacque's son Paul was born in 1585 in Metz and baptized at the St. Saviour Church. He married Anne Pillon on May 12, 1613. His two sons, our the Jacques and Paul who emigrated to Norway to start our family line.
Paul was born in Metz in 1617 and was baptized on September 6th 1617 at St. Saviour Church in Metz. He married Karen Micheldatter, and died in Smaalenene Norway (the old name for Østfold County in the southeast) on March 20th 1660. He served as a Major in the Oppland Regiment.
Jacob was born in Metz in 1619, married Anne Christendatter, and died in Vaug, Norway in 1679. A number of the Michelets in Norway were in the military.
The Michelets were said to be nobility, though I understand that they lost that standing when one of them married a commoner. The main area they were from was Trøgstad in Østfold, Norway with a large farm named Solberg being one of the main family homes. Other primary areas the Michelets lived in were Halden in Østfold, Enebakk in Askerhus, Moland in Fyresdal, Lillehammer in Oppland, and Oslo.
