Pedro Zanoni Respall was a painter, born in Iloilo, Philippines.. Little is known about Pedro - how and why he came to the Philippines. He painted a replica of Juan Luna’s ‘’Spolarium’’, and three other paintings of the classic Roman genre that now are displayed on the walls of the main entry hall of the Syquia Mansion in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. The current occupants of the Syquia Mansion (grandchildren of ex-President Elpidio Quirino, who married a Syquia) believe Pedro was recruited by the Augustinian clergy to paint the frescoes on Vigan’s churches. It is also believed that he eventually joined the artists’ studio of the famous Filipino painter Juan Luna, who was from Vigan to create copies of Luna masterpieces for eager clients — such as the Spoliarium.
He married Gema Locsin Conlu in Silay, Negros Oriental, also needs further research. Gema was ten years his senior, widow with children of a de la Rama local scion. This would have been before he ended up in Vigan, as Gema died in 1894, and his Spolarium is dated 1911.
His painting of a young child, Cristina Yulo, is displayed in the Vargas Museum, University of the Philippines. He would have had connections with the Yulos, as Gema’s father was Vicente Yulo Conlu (married to Perfecta Lacson Locsin, of Silay).
