About Peleg Card

• WHY DID PELEG DIE ? • 1777 , HOOSICK FALLS (WALLOOMSAC), NY - POWNAL, VERMONY • Peleg Card 1740-1777 In a letter to Lt. Silas Watson, on August 27, 1777, the Vermont Council of Safety requested evidence against Jonathan and Peleg Card for their trial, scheduled to be held 2 days hence (Aug 29, 1777.) A. It is known that Jonathan Card was a loyalist who fought with Col. Baum at the Battle of Bennington on 16 August 1777. The scheduled trial, then, would have been held because of his Tory activities. B. There is no documentation that I have yet seen supporting the participation of Peleg Card in the Battle of Bennington, -- for either side -- but there are hints: 1. The letter of 27 Aug 1777 referenced above regarding the trial of Peleg Card 2. A letter of Sep 4, 1777 from the Council directing that wounded prisoners be put in the meeting-house. 3. Peleg's death on 6 September 1777 (not 6 April as some erroneously have it) 21 days after the Battle. 4. An additional letter from Joseph Fay, Secretary to the Council of Satety, dated Sept 8, 1777 -- two days after Peleg Card’s death -- that says “You are hereby required to take the body of ____ ____, and him safely keep in the guard- house, until further orders from this Council. You are also to continue him in irons.” (The name was deleted by the compiler of this record...... but is this Peleg ?) The questions then become: A. Was there a trial ? B. Were both Jonathan and Peleg Card the defendants ? C. What was the result of the trial ? 1. They certainly were not executed….. David Redding was the only Tory executed in Vermont. 2. No Card lands were confiscated in Pownal, VT -- even though Jonathan’s father William and three of his brothers fought beside him at the Battle of Bennington. What I really want to know is why Peleg Card, my 4th great grandfather, died on September 6, 1777 -- at the age of 37. . Was it Epidemic/Disease ? (His 4 year old daughter Alice died 20 days after him.) . Wounds received in Battle ? As a prisoner ? . Accident ? rb
