Penny Coomes, who started figure skating at the age of just eight, competed in the mixed ice dance at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games alongside partner Nick Buckland. These were the pairs debut Olympic Winter Games where they placed 20th, scoring a personal best in their free dance routine.
The Coomes/Buckland partnership was instigated in 2005, having gone to the same school and university together. Coomes’ stepfather Phillip Askew was National Ice Dance Champion and is part of their coaching/choreographer team.
At the 2008 British Junior Championships Coomes broke her foot during the competition. However despite the excruciating pain, she battled though and remarkably went on to win! She then competed at the World Junior Championships before having surgery on it at the end of the season.
