About Per Aasberg-Jacobsen

After high school Per attended the naval cadet school at Holmen, Cph. On graduating to cadet he continued at the sea officers school. Attended several artillery trainings courses in USA and Great-B>ritain.

In connection with the german invasion of denmark during world war 2, he was one of the marine officers who took part in scuttling the danish fleet to prevent the Nazi´s use of danish ships. Exactly what Per did in occupied Denmark during worldwar 2 is not really known as he never wanted to talk about it. However it is known that he helped jews escape to Sweden by way of the Sound. After the war, in 1947 he sailed with a submarine U-1. In the years to come he advanced in rank, and in 1962-1966 he was commander of the danish naval base on Greenland - "Grønnedal". The americans called the base Green Valley. In 1967 he went back to Denmark and was captain for 4 danish frigates in succesion, Vædderen, Isbjørnen, Ingolf and Hvidbjørnen. The frigates main purpose was protection and control of danish fishing waters. His many missions were mainly in the North Atlantic, especially the Færo Islands and Greenland.

It was on one of these missions on the 3. january 1967 that Vædderen - F349 found a scottish trawler "Aberdeen Venturer" fishing inside danish territorial waters of the Færo islands. Warning shots were fired and a dinghy sent out from Vædderen, but the Venturer ran to international waters. However Vædderens on board helicopter had already made sure of photos and long. lat. positions which proved that the Venturer had violated danish waters. In 1971 he was offered a promotion to commodore, which he declined. After a few years of administrative work at naval headquarters he took an early pension. He now spent his time enjoying his greatest hobby which was sailing on his yacht, the Toddy 1, and later a Bandholm yacht the Toddy 2.

In the following years he became more and more invalidated by sclerose, until he at last only could lie in his bed under great pain.

Per was decorated by Queen Margrethe 2 with the knights order of Dannebrog.
