About Perkins Allen

Perkins Allen, born December 1, 1747, at Tisbury, Martha’s Vineyard, Dukes County, Massachusetts, a child of Ebenezer Allen and Sarah (Chase) Daggett. As a younger man he apparently was a sea captain, sailing under the flags of Britain, Spain, France, and Portugal, and is described as being of short stature, broad shoulders, large head, deep eyes, and has a broad brogue. At Tisbury he married his first wife, Abigail Smith, December 28, 1769; they have at least four children: Elizabeth, Ichabod, Abigail, and Perkins Jr. [Abigail Smith is a child of Ransford Smith and Elizabeth Lambert.] After completing his maritime career, Captain Perkins Allen became a farmer at Homes Hole, Martha’s Vineyard, and before 1790, removed his family north to Sidney, Maine and then to Plantation No. 3 near Phillips, Maine where he helped found the town of Curvo, now known as Avon. He was the first white man to attach a name, other than No. 3, to Phillips, calling it Curvo because to him it resembled a port in the Azores. After his first wife Abigail died, he met and married his second wife, Susannah (Greeley) Davenport, August 24, 1797 at Farmington, Maine. Susannah Greeley, a child of Moses Greeley, came to Maine from Haverhill, Massachusetts with her parents. She married first, Joseph Davenport, son of Isaac Davenport of Dorchester, Massachusetts, and they had two sons. Joseph Davenport, George Washington's personal bodyguard, contracted smallpox about 1778 and died. His widow, Susannah, married Perkins Allen.

Captain Perkins Allen died in Curvo in 1826 and is buried in a lot just beyond the bounds of Seth Greeley's land.
