About Pernille Wilhelmsen

Niels Wilhelmsen Blom and Pernille Pedersdatter Niels Wilhemson Blom was born in Norway; his family descended from Norweigan royalty and was wealthy. Niels’ father, Wilhelm, was a head officer in the Royal Norwegian Navy. While fighting in a war against Denmark, he was knocked off his ship and drowned at sea. Niels’ mother, Berthe took all of her children and moved in with her uncle. Pernille Pedersdatter was also born in Norway. Several months before Pernille was born, her father drowned while sailing to Denmark for food supplies. When Pernille was six years old, she went to live with her uncle and aunt, who were rich. Her uncle was a shipbuilder. While working on a big ship he had a bad accident and died. Niels and Pernille met and were married. Pernille’s aunt died soon thereafter. Pernille inherited her uncle and aunt’s rich land and home. Niels was a sailor. For years, he worked as a cook on a large ship. Pernille was afraid he would drown at sea like both of their fathers. She asked him to stop being a sailor and to get a job on land; he honored her wishes and did so. Niels and Pernille had five children. When missionaries came to Norway, they were welcomed into the Wilhelmson home, and were frequent visitors. Niels and Pernille gave the missionaries money to help them on their missions. Pernille studied the Bible and quickly recognized the truth of the restored gospel. She accepted the teachings with gratitude. She was one of the first Norwegianin Brevig, Norway to be baptized. Niels was stubborn and aristocratic; he didn’t accept the gospel right away. Later, that year, he got a testimony of his own. The missionaries wanted to hold a meeting at the Wilhelmson home, but Pernille didn’t want them to because she was expecting a baby. President Larsen said that she should be excommunicated, and she was. After three years, Pernille was rebaptized. (Excommunication and rebaptism was very common in the early days of the Church.) Niels and Pernille helped pay for many Norwegian Saints to travel to Salt Lake City, including President Larsen, the man who had baptized and excommunicated them. Niels and Pernille took their children and sailed across the ocean. They crossed the plains to Salt Lake City, Utah. Pernille walked the whole way to Salt LakeCity, except for crossing the Mississippi River, even though she had bad feet. Pernille was a midwife; she helped many babies be born on the plains. When Niels and Pernille got to Salt Lake City, they had only five dollars left of their inherited money. Families far and near called for Pernille to help their babies be born. She never charged money for her work. She often fasted and prayed over her problems. Niels and Pernille grew old. Their daughter, Mary had married James Henry Clinger. Niels and Pernille lived in a one-room home on a hill in front of their daughter’s home. Pernille died and her funeral was held under the apple trees of the Clinger family home. When Niels got sick he moved in with Mary and she cared for him until he passed away. His funeral was also held in front of the Clinger family home. Adapted from their biography on FamilySearch.org
