Born Peter Kingsley Archer (1926-11-20)20 November 1926 Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England[1] Died 14 June 2012(2012-06-14) (aged 85) Reading, England Nationality British Political party Labour (20 November 1926 – 14 June 2012) was a Labour Party member of the House of Lords.

Before his elevation to the Lords, Archer was the Member of Parliament for Rowley Regis and Tipton and for Warley West, being first elected in the 1966 general election; he represented the later seat from February 1974 after boundary changes.[1] He left the House of Commons at the 1992 general election.[2]

He held the post of Solicitor General from 7 March 1974 to 4 May 1979 and Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 1983 to 1987. After that he received a life peerage as Baron Archer of Sandwell, of Sandwell in the County of West Midlands in 1992.[3] In 1998 he successfully proposed an amendment to the Crime and Disorder Bill which abolished the death penalty for treason and piracy with violence.

He was Vice-Chair of the All-Party Group for World Governance, [1] and President of the One World Trust, of the World Disarmament Campaign, and of the Fabian Society. [2]

Lord Archer also chaired the Enemy Property Claims Assessment panel which as of 29 December 2007 had paid out more than £21m - 10 times its budget - to individuals claiming back funds which had been frozen by the British government during the Second World War. The panel revealed that, in all, 400 claims had been successful, indicating that the average payout had been in the region of £50,000.

He died on 14 June 2012.[1] He was married to Margaret Smith from 1954 until his death. The couple had one son, born in 1962, and one grandson.
