Peter Burgstaller (1964 – 2007)

Brief overview:

Peter (43), was shot and killed on Selborne Golf Estate in Durban, South Africa on 23 November 2007. Police suspect the murder was the result of a robbery, as Burgstaller's mobile phone and golfing equipment were missing at the scene of the crime. At the time of his murder, delegates were attending the World Cup qualifying draw in nearby Durban, South Africa.

Burgstaller, a father of two children who ran an events agency in Saltzburg, was killed the day he checked into his hotel.

Three men were arrested after the murder. On 30 October 2009 two of the arrested men were convicted of murder and of robbery with aggravating circumstances. They received lengthy prison sentences.

  • It emerged in court that Mthokozisi had four previous convictions which included assault, theft and housebreaking. For its evidence the State relied mainly on testimony by Zwelo Mngoma, a tractor driver at the Selborne Golf Estate.
  • Mthokozisi Msani was given 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances, a life sentence for murder, 15 years for the illegal possession of a firearm and five years for possession of ammunition.
  • His younger brother Simo was given 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and 20 years for murder. All sentences would run concurrently.
