About Peter Corson

Not the husband of Deborah Townsend

Biography

Peter Corson, also known as “Peeter Carsten,” was the son of Carsten Jansen and his wife Barbara. He was born about 1656 at Gravesend, New Netherland Colony, and died April 1731 at Cape May, New Jersey.

The two sons, John and Peter, of Carsten Jansen, were born at about the time (1664) that the English took over control of New Netherland from the Dutch. At the time they became of age and their names began to appear in the records, the effect of the English customs, that began to prevail after the English assumed control, was being felt and the patronymic system, that had heretofore been rigidly followed by the Dutch and Scandinavian settlers in naming or designating their wives and children, was not followed in its truest form. (page 4 in "Three Hundred Years With The Corson Families")

Page 27: The children of Peter Corson and his wife, Deborah, whom he had married in Gravesend, L. I., were sons,

  3. Abigail bt 1670 - 1680 and
  4. Mary b. b 1698

The sons were identified by three conveyance records in the Office of the Secretary of State, in Trenton, N. J., and the daughter by the will of her husband, Shamger Hand, Jr. < Archive.Org >

Peter likely died in April 1731; his estate was settled 29 April 1731.

Deborah was born in 1660 Deborah Townsend ... She passed away in 1695. The Corson's were Quakers

Note: No documentation found as of yet to attest to birth date. Estimated birth date by calculation of proven birth dates dates of her children as an alternative method presumably done by previous contributors. Also have found no documentation that Deborah's maiden name is "Townsend".

These entries below are from research conducted by Orville Corson and published in 1939.

Page 11: Peter’s wife, Deborah, it can also be assumed that her parents were English and probably Quakers. The names of the sons and grandsons of Carsten and Barbara, Jan (John) and Peter, Andries or Andrias (Andrew), Jacob and Christian are probably more typically Scandinavian than English, but the names of the granddaughters, Hannah, Martha and Abigail, are Scripture names and certainly indicate English Quaker parentage. The names in the several following generations were names that were commonly used by the pioneer families of Cape May. https://archive.org/details/threehundredyear00cors_0/page/10/mode/2...
