Peter Helland

Peder "Peter" Erikson Helland was the son of Erik Pederson Helland and Marta Knudsdtr Sorgenfri.

He departed Stavanger, Norway, aboard the "Bark Hebe" on May 17, 1870, and arrived in Quebec, June 30, 1870. He was accompanied by his wife, Anne, and nine children.

According to his great granddaughter, Sylverne Helland-Schulte: "They came in a little sail boat making a six-week crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. They took along their own food: flatbread, salt meat, salt fish and barrels of water. They settled in Story County, Iowa."

Peter married Berta Halvardsdatter (1813-1837) on July 8, 1834, in Norway. To this union was born was born: 1) Mary "Marie" Erikson Helland (Mrs. Edvenson) (1834-1911) 2) Berta Karina Helland (1836-1837)

Peter married Anna Johnsdatter [aka Johnson] Veiner Bjerga On July 11, 1839, in Norway. Contributor's notes: 1) Peter was last listed in the 1870 Iowa Census living in Howard Township, Story county, Iowa. He was identified as Peter Erickson, age 64. 2) Roland Cemetery records identify his plot, next to wife, Anna, but do not list his date of birth or death. 3) There is one family reference on Ancestry listing his date of death as 1873, but this has not been confirmed. 4) Peter died prior to the 1880 Iowa Census. In 1880, his wife, Anna, was living with her daughter and son-in-law and was identified as a widow.
