Biography

Was Peter Trible B. 1670 (who the colonial records show to be in Virginia in 1691) from England or was he the son of William Treble, Jr. who came to colonial Virginia in 1640? The answer to that question may never be known, but some research has been conducted to try to answer it. So far, the answer is unknown. The destruction of many of the early records of Virginia has hampered the investigation. However, the Land Patents of Virginia do offer one source for trying to locate Peter "Trible" prior to 1691 in Virginia. And there are some English records that offer sources for trying to locate Peter "Trible" prior to 1691 or William Treble prior to 1640 in England. The Tribble family II : (descendants of Peter Tribble of Essex County, Virginia.
Peter Tribble is described as a cooper (barrel maker) in various Essex County deeds, where he lived until his death in 1738. Apparently he was illiterate because all deeds which he signed or witnessed are signed with his mark, a "P." Eliza beth, his wife, was also probably illiterate because the one deed she signed was with her mark, an "E" (Essex Deeds 1699-1702, p 58b). Peter Tribble appears in the Quit Rent Roll for 1704 in Essex County, being charged with 100 acres of land (English Duplicates of Lost Virginia Records, by Louis des Cognets, Jr., 1958, p 139). At the time, he owned 150 acres of land in Essex County so it is not clear if the 100 acres is in Essex or elsewhere. A transcription of the 1715 Quit Rent Roll for Essex County does not list a Peter Tribble, but does list a Peter Greble charged with 100 acres ("William and Mary Quarterly (2)," Vol. 18, p 205). It is supposed that "Peter Greble" is a transcription error that should be "Peter Treble.“ Peter Tribble's will is dated 6 Apr 1738 and recorded in Essex County on 18 Jul 1738 (Essex Wills 1735-43, p 142). His wife, Elizabeth, is not mentioned and the executors are two of his sons, John and William, so it is supposed that his wife predeceased him. Further support for her predeceasing him is the fact that her relinquishment of dower does not appear on deeds 1718 and later, but does appear on a deed dated 1707. The children mentioned in the will are George Trible, the eldest son; daughter, Neaney Piles; Mary Browne, the eldest daughter; son, John Trible; and son, William Trible.
