Petrus Johannes “Piet” Du Toit (Snr), born 17 May 1836, baptised on 4 July 1836 at Graaff-Reinet. Died 3 February 1912, Hopetown, Northern Cape, Union of South Africa.
Petrus Johannes “Piet” Du Toit farmed “Doornbult” with his father and brother Johannes Petrus “Jan” Du Toit. He had initially farmed in the Graaff-Reinet District, but moved to the Hopetown area when he married.
He married at Hopetown, central Northern Cape on 3September 1855 to Anna Susanna Catharina du Plessis who was just 16 at the time. As we have seen with other branches of the family, frontier farmers often married young – such were the exigencies and independence of life on the veld. Anna was born 2 August 1839 Fauresmith District, and died 14 June 1907 at the Du Toit house in Hopetown (note not Hoopstad).
“Piet” Du Toit and Anna had ten children. Petrus Johannes Du Toit (Jnr) from whom we are descended was their seventh child and third son. The names of Petrus Johannes Du Toit (Jnr)’s siblings and their dates of birth or baptism (all at “Doornbult” farm and Hopetown) are as follows:
All the sons of “Piet” and Anna farmed in the Hopetown and Richmond Districts for at least some time in their lives. Christoffel farmed ‘Goedehoop”, later moving to Fauresmith District, where his mother Anna’s family farmed; Jan Gabriel farmed successfully near Hopetown and later near Smousdam, keeping a house “Radyn” in Hopetown at which he died on 14 April 1931; Willem Francois likewise farmed in the District and kept a general store in Hopetown. “Piet” continued on “Doornbult” with his father and brother “Jan” initially, later farming near Douglas, in the Herbert District about 60 miles North West of Hopetown.
Petrus Johannes “Piet” Du Toit died at his house in Hopetown on 3 February 1912.
