A Purple Heart belonging to Robert Bates was found in an alley in Bakersfield, California in 2012. The local VFW started a national search for a relative so the medal could be returned to the family.......

Robert Alvin Bates was born in Black, Texas on Jan. 26, 1919 and died on Dec. 7, 1941. The birth father was John Alvin Bates, 1889-1964 and Mother is Louie. In 1940, he was single and living in San Diego where he was assigned to the U.S. Naval Hospital. He was born in Parmer County in the Texas Panhandle and in 1940 his parents were living in the community of German in Jack County.
