Attended St Ignatious School on the hill in Church street Richmond.
The family left Richmond and shifted to Western Australia in the 1890's.
A Postal assistant Phil enlisted 1 January 1916. His Unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board HMAT A29 Suevic on 6 June 1916.
A Private in the 44th Battalion he is buried Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery (Plot III, Row D, Grave No. 14), Armentieres, France.
KAVANAGH. — Died of wounds on the 21st January in France, Phillip, dearly loved youngest son of Margaret and the late Daniel Kavanagh, (late of Richmond, Victoria); loved brother of Mrs. Darby (Western Australia), Mrs. McDonald (Perth, Western Australia), Mrs. Smith (Western Australia), Kate, Bella, Arthur, Tom, Dan and Joe.
