From William Johnston, 1648-1719, Isle of Wight, VA

William Johnson appears in the records as the father of an illegitimate child, named Jane, by Philarete Woodward, daughter of Colonel Thomas Woodward (1604-1677), first Surveyor-General of the Carolina Colony.

From "The Woodward Family Tree - Thomas Woodward of England"...

Thomas Woodward, Sr. left a daughter Philarite Woodward who married John Giles. There are a number of later records for the Giles descendants that seem to suggest a connection between their family and Samuel Woodward of Chowan Co. Other records suggest a connection to William Woodward of Isle of Wight and the Smelly descendants of Thomas Giles, either the son or brother of John Giles.

Before her marriage to John Giles, Philarite Woodward produced an illegitimate daughter by William Johnston, Sr. of Isle of Wight. Other descendants of the same William Johnston by his wife Sarah Griffith were later closely associated with descendants of Oliver Woodward, Sr. of Isle of Wight. Although these clues suggest that these later Woodwards may have descended from Thomas Woodward, Sr., proving any descendants will be difficult or impossible. Thomas Woodward, Sr. had only three known sons. One, Thomas Woodward, Jr., is known to have died without issue. The other two sons, both named John, may or may not have left descendants. None can be proven at this time. The elder John died in England, and even his father, Thomas Woodward, Sr., was not sure if he left any children. The younger son named John disappeared from records.

In 1662, Thomas Woodward was appointed the first Surveyor-General of Albemarle (the Carolinas), in 1662. [14V76-77]; [18V297]; 9WMQ(1)110-111]; & [Tyler. op. cit., p. 299]. On September 25, 1663, he and his son, Thomas Woodward, Jr., had two land grants totaling 4, 500 acres, while his wife- Katherine and daughter- Philarite were granted 750 acres, all of which was in what is now North Carolina. [Nell Marion Nugent. Cavaliers and Pioneers - Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents, 1623-1666, Volume One, pp. 426-428].

The will of Thomas Woodward was dated October 5, 1677 and proven October 9, 1677, in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. He named his wife- Katherine; daughters- Katherine, Elizabeth, Mary, Rachel, and Philarite; sons- Thomas and John; and provided: "if my Sonn John hath left any Children in England I do give them Two full pounds apiece." [Will Book No. 2, 1666-1719, p. 165] & [Blanche Adams Chapman. Wills and Administrations of Isle of Wight Co., Virginia, 1647-1800. p. 17].
