On May 4, 1942, Philip Thomas Romano was killed in a collision with an automobile while chasing a speeder. On May 4, 1942, the Chicago Tribune reported:
POLICEMAN DIES IN HEAD-ON CRASH CHASING SPEEDER
Motorcycle Policeman Philip Romano was killed last night in a collision with an automobile while he was chasing a speeder. He was riding northeast in Forest Preserve drive when his motorcycle crashed head-on with a car driven by Raymond Gustafson, 25 years old, of 5958 Grace street, as Gustafson, coming from the opposite direction, turned at Olcott avenue.
Romano was still conscious when taken to the Belmont hospital. Before he died, he told the story of chasing the speeder who escaped
Romano had been a member of the motorcycle police seven months, having served previously as a state highway policeman and a Criminal court bailiff. The policeman, 33 years old, lived with his wife, Pearl and five children ranging in age from 6 to 14 years, at 5536 North Mulligan avenue.
