About Philip de Angulo, 3rdBaron Navan

Those docs are posted now, the last two show William paying to get his lands back, and Phillip paying to get his fathers land of Navan back. That’s Gausslyn land of course, as he was Baron Navan. Gilbert at this time frame was deceased, he was KIA in Cael a Uisce Castle that he was or had built in Assaroe /Ballyshannon area of Sligo, to consolidate the grant of lands of which doc I just posted as well.

Also notice the King telling Meiler Fitzhenry, son of King Henry and the Famous Nesta Of Wales, (probably the most important woman historically in all of Britain, whose sire decided the fate of Ireland and Wales if not All of Britain and Ireland ) to keep the peace between Walter De Lacy and Gilbert and William De Angulo, this because the De Lacy’s had taken the land that Gilbert had forfeited when he and his brothers all stayed loyal to King Richard the Lionheart, when Future King John , then Lord John Of Mortain, tried his Palace Coup in 1194 while King Richard was on Crusade. The De Angulo had sworn fealty to their Leige Lord, King Richard, and only his death would remove that fealty.

Even some current historians like Colin Veach , Tadg OKeefe , Patrick Holland, all praising Helen Parros née Walton’s work that’s ignorant of the De Angulo as well, and others ignore all these legal docs I posted today, and spin various tales, the likes of which end up on Wikipedia. Colin calls Gilbert “ the rogue Baron” says he was “expelled from Ireland,” and glosses over all the De Lacy misdeeds, while ignoring their, the De Lacy’s , participation in the Albigensian Crusade in Southern France in 1215. -1218.

The great historians a century earlier , Edwards, Curtis, Sweetman, all mention and discuss the De Angulos, current historians talk about the Invasion and conquest of Connacht in 1230’s as if that’s when it started, but Gilbert was their in 1193, and had land from King of Connacht Cathal Crovderg in 1195, confirmed by King John in 1207.

This area Maenmagh, was heavily developed and settled by MacGoisdealbh people, and Patrick Holloand disregards all the Motess and Baileys and early palisades that Gilbert and his son or Brother Jordan built here , completely.

1250s has a Fitzjordan as a local Lord in Maenmagh, I believe this is Gilbert 2 grandson, son of Jordan. Name change may have occurred to blend in or avoid land loss during subsequent OConor battles for the Kingship of Connacht, that the MacCostelloes were heavily involved with, over 60 mentions in a Annals Of Loch Ce alone.

King John actually made war against Hugh De Lacy, first Earl Of Ulster, who had ursurped all of John De Courcy, the greatest Knight of them all, work and history in Ulster, that de Courcy had attacked and conquered with minimal troops and little assistance. Gilbert was in De Courcys crew, and built the first Norman Castle in Belfast town, still known as Caislean Mic Costello today.

The only way de Lacy could capture De Courcy, who was trying to implement a Isle Of Man, Ulster, Western Scotland Nation tripartite Nation, that my research shows, was to grab de Courcy on Good Friday, while De Courcy was disarmed and not wearing his armour or mail while he prayed in Down Patrick church, he was a devout Catholic. Even so he grabbed a Candle pole and killed three or four attackers before he was overwhelmed and captured, and sent to a London. Hugh de Lacy 2 inherited all De Courcys castles, and work he had done establishing himself in Ulster from 1177 conquest until 1204 capture.

Anyhow, let’s consolidate and confirm the De Angulo pedigree, as follows, after these original brothers their Sons Phillip, who I believe is Gilbert 2 son, is the MacCostello mentioned in the Annals until Miles, who builds Athanchip Castle shows up in the Annals.

Miles is Phillip 1 Son I believe, because his older brother Hugh becomes Baron Navan, and the docs I posted show Philip 1 as paying a fee for his dads land of Navan. So a son of Philips becomes next Baron Navan, which is Hugh mentioned above. Between Gausslyn( Jocelyn) 1st Baron Nava, and Philip Third Baron Navan, Gilbert 2. ( being son of Gausslyn, who was son of Gilbert 1, Lord of the Angle, ) becomes Baron Navan from his pardon in 1207 to his KIA in 1212, and Miles becomes the first confirmed MacGoisdealbh, called MacCostelloe in the annals.

Philip 1 pays for the Barony of Navan as the docs I posted show, after 1212 death of Gilbert, this confirms my history I believe. William had his own land in Louth, in Ardee, when he built the castle there and married the widowJoan of Roger Peppard, and had sons called a Fitzwilliam This was the land he was paying for in the docs listed, lost when he was attainted with a Phillip and Agilbert in 1194-95 time frame. This date is sound because Hamo des Valoignes did the attainting, over the King Richard Lionheart palace coup by John, as Hamo was only Justiciar from 1194 to 1195.

Enough for today, but next Friday, 29 March 2024, Good Friday for everyone with a soul still, marks the 820th Anniversary of the De Lacy Betrayal Of John De Courcy, while he prayed the Rosary in the Church Of Downpatrick, that St Patrick himself founded, so remember the generation of the Vision, the men like John De Courcy, William the Marshall, and our very own Gilbert De Angulo, aka MacGoisdealbh, who stood shoulder to shoulder with the greatest Knights of the Chivalric Age, Of Honour and Service to your Leige Lord, your family and your God.

Wikipedia is useless for historical accuracy, it’s opinion and speculation that requires an editor to agree with the posts, not check them at all. Phillip Gilbert and William are brothers, Walter, Richard and Jordan were also brothers, all were sons of Gausslyn, which is the basis of MacGoisdealbh. I will post irrefutable historic docs proving this today. My only joy with this tree is that the fake myth of Hostilo or Costilo as another son of Gausslyn ( Jocelyn) is finally put to bed. The Gilbert who was given Mahergallion and Ratoath, Nobber was the Father Of Gausslyn. Gilbert who invaded Inis Clotheran in 1193, his and our first appearance in the Annals, was son of Gausslyn, younger brother to William, and the first called MacGoisdealbh.
Wikipedia is for lazy researchers, and to control the narrative on all the wokester garbage being used to destroy the family unit, that all of us posting on Geni embrace wholeheartedly. In fact it’s Family that we research.
Posting on media link today, March 22, the day after my mom has her first Great Grandchild. Our Family marches on. Hopefully whoever posts this Wikipedia garbage will remove it after they read my historic legal docs written for the same English King who did the Magna Carta.

Thanks Steven,

KeOre and Happy St Patrick’s Day to you as well.

I am lucky enough to have spent some time in wonderful New Zealand, especially the South Island

Costello Hill Scenic Reserve a memorable day on the west cost on our Southern Hemisphere exploits with my wife.

I have also read your family tree, it is quite impressive.

I would love to exchange info, the early days of my family name founders is hard to nail down.

Philip is mentioned in many legal documents however, And I have him building St John the Baptist Abbey in Rindown Roscommon in 1215, and being the Tythe collector for King John for the money owed by Crovderg O Conor, King of Connacht.

One doc states King John regranted “ his Fathers land” to Philip in 1208, this I took to mean Gilbert Mor land in Ratoath and Nobber, Meath. Jocelyn land in Navan was never affected by the sons staying loyal to King Richard The Lionheart, which was the cause of their banishment.

To your point I now wonder was it Williams land in Cavan, although I know from legal docs Philip the first was a brother of William, Gilbert, Richard, Jordan, Walter, these were the Sons of Oistealbh, Mac Oisdealbh, eventually MacGoisdealbhaig, Mac Costelloe..

William I have marrying Joan Peppard, his sons were Ftizwilliams Peppard, and Lords of Ardee. William seems to be the oldest, from a legal doc granting him land in Tullow, in 1176 in Ormond deed number two.

His Sons rebuilt Trim Castle, famous in Braveheart the movie

The second Philip I have as living until 1285, his daughters married into powerful clans in Breffney, and Tyrone.

The land Granted to Gilbert Mor in 1195, Maenmagh in East Galway, is where my father Sean Snr is from, and his cousins still farm the same land, granted in 1195 by King Crovderg, confirmed and regranted by King John in 1215. Gilberts brother Jordan looked after this area, his son Gilbert FitzJordan is in the records, and was the founder of the Mac Jordan Clan.

Look forward to comparing records, always need help working out famous family lines.

Thanks Steven, and Happy St Patrick’s Day.once again.
