Philip II van Maldeghem, son of Willem and Margareta van de Woestine, was born in 1232 (Maldeghem la Loyale, p. 390 and 391). He died before 1275 (Th. Leuridan: Chat. Lille, Lille 1873, Pr., no. 151, p. 262). He is mentioned as castellan and lord of Maldegem (Maldeghem la Loyale, p. 391) and as a knight in October 1263 (idem, p. 392). He married Elizabeth Belle, daughter of Salomon, burgher of Ypres, and of Christiana van Guines (Mme de Lalaing, p. 392, October 1263. - Idem, p. 239 and 394. - E. Warlop: The Flemish nobility before 1300 , II, pp. 364 and 369).
From this marriage four children were born: Philip III, Agnes, Katelijne and Willem van Maldeghem (Maldeghem la Loyale, p. 239).
At the age of eighteen, Philip II granted - as he himself testifies - a charter, confirming the foundation, made by his father in 1250, of two chapels in the church of Maldegem. In this piece he is referred to as Castellanus et Dominus de Maldenghem :
"Philippus, Castellanus et Dominus de Maldenghem, significat W. Tornacensi episcopo, quomodo Willelmus, pater suus, miles, dominus de Maldenghem (se annum xviii agente et ut primogenito consentiente) instituit duas capellanias in ecclesia parochieghemiali, genitric de maldenghem , SS Amandi, Barbare et omnium sanctorum, ob remedium anime sue, et Agnetis de Gistella et Margarete de Wastina, uxorum suarum Et assignavit singulis capellaniis xv libras flandrenses annui redditus Unus dicet quotidie missam abare altare S. assignantur multi parvi redditus, scilicet XV libras, et alter, etc., quotidie ad altare S. (After a copy, in the register of the chapter of Harelbeke. Original piece in the church archives in Harelbeke; copy in Lille N° 1114). However, in 1257 Philip II of Maldeghem is simply called "domicellus" in one piece - as much as a squire - which suggests that he had not yet been knighted and the honorary title of castellan did not yet belong to him, or that the paternal heritage still had not come to pass. He took but little part in political affairs, as far as we know, and he was no longer alive in 1279, as a charter of that year indicates. Elisabeth Belle, his wife, died on March 27, 1274, and in the hospital of Belle, founded by her mother, founded a perpetual mass for the atonement of her soul, for which she left a bequeath of 500 pounds.…to be continued

Dutch: Filips, kastelein en heer van Maldegem, brengt W" bisschop van Doornik, ter kennis dat hij destijds op zijn achttiende handelde en als eerstgeborene instemde met de stichting van twee kapelanijen in de parochiekerk van Maldegem door zijn vader Willem, ridder en heer van Maldegem, ter ere van God, van ziin Moeder Maria, van de heiligen Amandus en Barbara en van alle heiligen, en dit tot lafenis van zijn ziel en die van zijn echtgenotes Agnes van Gistel en Margareta van Waasten. En aan elke kapelaan kende hij een jaarinkomen toe van 15 ponden Vlaams. De ene zal dagelijks een mis opdragen aan het altaar van de heilige Barbara, waaraan verscheidene kleine renten verbonden zijn ter waarde van 15 ponden, en de andere, enz. dagelijks aan het altaar van Sint-Amandus, waarvan het inkomen bezet is op vier molens te Maldegem. Ook de vergoeding voor de koster is nauwkeurig bepaald. Eveneens 20 schellingen aanvul­ lende inkomsten enz. uit andere goederen heeft hij bestemd voor het geval er een tekort zou zijn, enz. Op datum van het jaar 1255. Met die toevoeging dat één van beiden volgens dienst, ertoe gehouden is naar de woonst van de heer van Maldegem te Reesinghe te komen om er de zondag te vieren, waar hij dan mee zal aanzitten aan zijn tafel en die van zijn opvolgers. Het was ook zijn vaders wil dat het aanstel­ lingsrecht in de voornoemde kapelanijen voor altijd zou toekomen aan de kapelnij van Harelbeke.

English: Philip, lord of Maldegem, knight, and my beloved wife Elisabeth, to all who shall look into this document, our greeting in the Lord. Be it known to all that for our greatest benefit and for the relief of the debts that keep us chained. In the time of Theodoric the Blessed, then venerable abbot of St. Bavo's Abbey in Ghent, we have legally sold to that abbey an annual interest of twenty-one pounds and five shillings Flemish, originating from about forty-four and a half bundles of land, little more or less, lying in the parish of Maldegem at the place called the Biest and about the place called Broeke, for two hundred and twenty-five pounds of Flemish good and lawful money, paid to us by the said abbey in good and ready money duly according to our will, and according to the usual custom of our debtors paid in full. To the forty-four and one-half acres of land we have, according to the law and custom of the country, in the judgment of the aldermen having jurisdiction over the lands in question, legally renounced, renounced, and thrown the culm, with all the right and improvement we had over it or could have had or regained in the future, for the benefit of the said abbey. Die vijftien ponden dienen wij en de meesters van dat gasthuis en zullen onze opvolgers, die met­ tertijd zullen instaan voor het bestuur van en het voogdijschap over het genoemde hospitaal, voor altijd aan de kapelaan van bedoelde tweede kapelanij dienen te voldoen op drie tijdstippen van het jaar, te weten honderd schellingen met Kerstmis, honderd schellingen met Pasen en honderd schellingen Vlaams op het feest van Sint-Remigius, begin oktober, en te nemen van de renten die door de genoemde Christina, als pure aalmoes, in vroeger tijden ten overstaan van de schepenen en de wet van leper in vol­ doende mate aan dat hospitaal zijn toegewezen en bezet om de bedoelde schikking uit te voeren. Ook moet geweten zijn dat die tweede kapelanij in het genoemde hospitaal, voor altijd moet bediend worden door een geschikt seculier kapelaan die niet kan afgesteld worden, tenzij wegens een vergrijp dat zijn afstelling vereist. Die seculiere kapelaan, verbonden aan de tweede kapelanij, moet dagelijks in het genoemde hospitaal de mis opdragen of op zijn kosten laten opdragen, waarbij te noteren valt dat, wan­ neer de bedienaar van de genoemde tweede kapelanij komt te overlijden, wij rectoren en voogden van het genoemde hospitaal en de meesters die dan in functie zullen zijn, moeten voorzien en ertoe gehou­ den zijn, bedoelde tweede kapelanij zonder verwijl dagelijks, uit de inkomsten van die kapelanij, te laten bedienen door een geschikt en waardig persoon, totdat ze zal toegewezen worden aan een geschikt en waardig seculier persoon die de priesterwijding heeft ontvangen, dat alles geheel in overeenstemming met het parochiaal recht, en wel zó als in de eerste overeenkomsten betreffende de eerste kapelanij tus­ sen genoemde Christina en de proost en het kapittel van Sint-Maartens in leper is bedongen, en zoals dat in de oorkonde betreffende die stichting opgesteld, geheel is vervat. En omdat het voorgaande niet vol­ gens de gebruikelijke kerkelijke voorschriften moet verlopen als de bisschop zijn toestemming verleent aan wat voorafgaat door dat met zijn gezag te bevestigen, smeken wij onze eerbiedwaardige vader en heer H., door Gods genade bisschop van Terwaan, nederig en ootmoedig dat hij, de vrome wens van voornoemde Christina indachtig, aan al het voorgaande en aan elk daarvan afzonderlijk evenzeer zijn toe­ stemming zou willen verlenen en zich zou verwaardigen dat alles en elk afzonderlijk met zijn bisschop­ pelijk gezag in zijn hoedanigheid van bisschop van genoemde plaats, te bevestigen, zo nochtans dat aan de genoemde Christina de eerste voordracht voor de genoemde kapelanij zou toekomen. Tot getuigenis hiervan en als bestendige herinnering daaraan, hebben wij, Simon Peperkin, Franciscus Belle en Johannes Balgh, rectoren en voogden van het genoemde hospitaal, aan dit document onze zegels laten hechten, samen met dat van voornoemde Christina.

English: Simon Peperkin, Franciscus Belle and Johannes Balgh, son of Pieter, rectors and guardians of the hospital of St. Nicholas in leper-Belle, to all who will look into this document our greetings and all good wishes. Be it known to you all that when Christina, then widow of Salomon called Belle, of the Burg of leper, with the intention of doing a work of charity, near the town of leper, in the jurisdiction of the diocese of Terwaan, had a hospital built for the maintenance of the poor, dedicated to St. Nicholas, and to the chaplaincy attached provided sufficient income for the work of a capuchin, the same Christina, moved by compassion and for the salvation of her soul and in particular (for the salvation of souls) of the said Solomon, her husband, her daughter Elisabeth, then wife of Maldegem, and Philip, then lord of Maldegem, and Johannes Belle, son of the aforementioned Salomon, her ancestors and also all the benefactors of the aforementioned hospital, founded in that hospital another chapel dedicated to St. Stephen, first martyr, to the value of fifteen pounds Flemish, to be received and owned forever by the minister of that chapel. These fifteen pounds are to be paid by us and the masters of that guest house and by our successors, who in time will be in charge of the administration and guardianship of the said hospital, to the chaplain of said second chaplaincy forever at three times of the year, namely one hundred shillings at Christmas, one hundred shillings at Easter and one hundred shillings Flemish on the feast of St. Remigius, beginning of October, and to take from the rents that by the said Christina, as pure alms, in former times before the aldermen and the law of Leper have been assigned and occupied to that hospital in sufficient measure to carry out the said arrangement. It must also be known that that second chaplaincy in the said hospital, must be served for ever by a suitable secular chaplain who cannot be appointed except on account of an offense requiring his appointment. That secular chaplain, attached to the second chaplaincy, must daily celebrate mass in the said hospital or have mass celebrated at his expense, whereby it is to be noted that, when the minister of the said second chaplaincy dies, we rectors and guardians of the said hospital and the masters who shall then be in office, must provide and be bound to have the said second chaplaincy served daily without delay, out of the revenues of said chaplaincy, until it shall be assigned to a suitable and worthy secular person who has been ordained priest, all this entirely in accordance with parochial law, and as stipulated in the first agreements concerning the first chapel between the aforementioned Christina and the provost and the chapter of St. Martin's in Leper, and as fully contained in the charter concerning that foundation. And because the foregoing must not proceed in accordance with the usual ecclesiastical regulations if the bishop gives his consent to what precedes by confirming it with his authority, we beg our venerable father and lord H., by God's grace bishop of Terwaan, humbly and magnanimously that, remembering the pious wish of the aforesaid Christina, he would grant his consent to all the foregoing and to each of them individually equally and would deign to confirm all that and each of them individually with his episcopal authority in his capacity as bishop of the said place, so nevertheless that to the aforesaid Christina would belong the first nomination for the aforesaid chapelry. In witness whereof and as a perpetual reminder thereof, we, Simon Peperkin, Francis Belle and Johannes Balgh, rectors and guardians of the said hospital, have caused our seals to be attached to this document, together with that of the said Christina.
Given in the year of our Lord twelve hundred and seventy-nine, on the eve of the feast of St. John the Baptist.
