Willem van Maldeghem succeeded his father Philip I as castellan, lord and sheriff of Maldegem. We find him already in 1226 called "castellanus". As the firstborn, according to the feudal system, he succeeded his father in the glorious estate and was also lord of Leischoot, Raas, etc... He married Margareta van de Woestine, wife of Schelderode, in other words Oudenmeersch, daughter of Gerard van Schelderode and Margareta van de Woestine. He married a second time to Agnes van Gistel, daughter of Arnold and Agnes van Vormezele (S. Bavon, no. 188, p. 191, February 1234, new style, - Maldeghem la Loyale, p. 390-391. From the first bed there were two children: Philip II van Maldeghem (Strubbe:
Egidius van Bredene, III B, no 67, p. 349) and Klara van Maldeghem (Mme de Lalaing, p. 237). The latter became the wife of Frans Belle, son of Salomon and Christiana de Guisnes.

Jan and Gerard van Maldeghem (Mme de Lalaing, p. 237-238) arose from the second marriage, which took place around 1241. Jan became head of the branch of the castellan of Raas and viscount of Râches; he had two sons: Pieter and Jan. According to Countess de Lalaing, the following inscription was read on his tomb in Flines: "Chy gist Jehan de Mandenghien, chevalier et chastellain de Raisse"….

A charter from the year 1233, which is in the archives of the diocese in Ghent, states that Willem van Maldeghem - with the consent of his wife Margareta van de Woestine - and provided the sum of one hundred pounds of Flemish, his rights to the fief of the Oudenmeersch , about Houtem, to the Saint Bavo's Abbey and, on the occasion of that sale, personally guarantees against the presumptions of Godfried, lord of Onkerzele. In another deed of that year, he acknowledges, by way of tribute to the abbot of St Bavo's Abbey, that he is obliged to pay an annual retribution of 10 pounds of Flemish currency. In 1240 a dispute arose between Willem van Maldeghem and Count Thomas van Savoye concerning the law of justice in the forest of Aalschoot, under Oosteeklo and Eeklo, one of the oldest seigniorial possessions of the house of Maldegem. The matter was settled amicably by arbitrators the following year, by mutual agreement of both parties. It was determined that the lord of Maldegem in the entire area of h​​ is seigniory from then on only half of the fines and other rights (existing says the charter, in pandationibus, arrestationibus et bustingis) was allowed to collect, while the other half was to be awarded to the Count of Flanders. The full text of this charter can be found in the archives of Sint-Donaas in Bruges, in Maldeghem la Loyale p. 389 and in De Potter en Broeckaert: Maldegem, p. 42-43).

In a charter of the same year, the lord of Maldegem is quoted as "miles" and "scoutheta" - sheriff - the latter name being added several times to the innkeepers of Maldegem. In 1242 we meet Willem van Maldeghem as referee, together with Hugo van Gaver and others, in a disagreement between the abbey and the sheriff of St.-Baafs, regarding their mutual rights (State Archives in Ghent, 2nd box, no. 3, no. 119 - A. van Lokeren: Hist. de l'abbaye de St. Bavon, Chartes et Documents, p. 27).

Margaret of Constantinople seems to have held William of Maldeghem in great esteem, for in 1247 and 1248 he was entrusted by her with important political missions. He was killed on the island of Walcheren, near Westkapelle, July 4, 1253 (Mme de Lalaing, p. 108)….to be continued

Ook geven ik, mijn echtgenote en mijn broer Filips ons woord dat we nooit door misleidend of kwaad opzet zullen beogen de voornoemde kerk in ver­ band met de gezegde tiende, enig nadeel te berokkenen. En mocht de kerk toch door mij of door toedoen van de mijnen enige schade overkomen, dan verbind ik er mij toe die geheel te vergoeden. Ik heb ook andere betrouwbare borgen aangesteld die ertoe gehouden zijn de kerk voor alle nadeel te behoeden, met name heer Filips van Waasten, heer Boudewijn van Praet, heer Dirkin van Maldeghem en heer Leo van Moerkerke, van wie de zegels als bewijs van hun borgstelling aan dit document zijn gehecht. English: I William. lord of Maldegem, bring to the notice of all who are now and who shall yet come, that lord Philip, my father. pledged the half of his tithe in Zuienkerke, completely unencumbered as he had it in his possession, to the church of St. Donatian in Bruges, under whose patronage it lies, for tach tig pounds of legal Flemish money. This commitment I ratified and still confirm, according to the contents of the document of my father Philip and of lord Goswijn, then bishop of Tournai, and of Philip, margrave of Namur. The other half of the tithe in question, with the exception of the forty sheaves that belong annually and forever to the said church of St. Donatian for the salvation of my father, I pledge with the consent and full will of my wife Margaret and of my brother Philip to the same church for seven hundred and sixty pounds of legal Flemish money, such that neither I nor my heir nor anyone from my vicinity will be able to buy them back within the next twelve years. And the lord earl himself, at his discretion, appoints and dismisses the aldermen in Maldegem. In confirmation thereof we have caused this document to be written and have caused it to be ratified by the affixing of our seals.
