Mountain Democrat Oct 1891 Placerville, CA "Beebe, In this city, Oct 14, 1891, Phillip R. Beebe, a native of California, aged 28 years. Deceaased it seems has been unfortunate having some years ago lost an eye by the explosion of a loaded cartridge. The immediate cause of his death was the discharge of a shotgun, while hunting quail near Granite Hill in this county, on Friday the 2nd instant. It seems that he was riding in a cart with a shotgun at his side. The jolting of the cart in some way caused the gun to explode, the entire charge entering his arm near the shoulder, completely shattering it. In this mangled condition, the blood flowing rapidly from the wound, he managed to reach the residence of Mr. Forni, nearly a mile from where the accident occured. A messenger was dispatched for a physician. He was brought to the residence of his sister in this city the next morning. On Tuesday evening the arm was amputated at the shoulder joint by doctors Smith and Meglone, but the patient was so far exausted that it seemed impossible for him to rally and on Wednesday he died. Deceased was an industrious young man of an impulsive, generous nature, kind hearted and liberal to a fault. He was widely known, and liked by all who knew him. He was interred at the Union Cemetery on Thursday at 3 o'clock p.m., the remains being followed to the grave by a large number of people. Deceased leaves several sisters and other relaives in this county to mourn his untimely taking off." Note: I have walked the cemetery many times looking for Phillips final resting place. Most likely his marker was of wood and long gone or unreadable.
